World Development Report 2026

The World Development Report 2026: The Promise of Artificial Intelligence is a flagship publication by the World Bank Group released on August 4, 2026, offering the first comprehensive assessment of how artificial intelligence (AI) impacts low- and middle-income developing economies.

Core Thesis and Opportunity

  • A Fast-Track to Growth – The report argues that AI can help developing nations achieve in a single decade what might otherwise take a century of traditional development.
  • Amplifying Workers vs. Replacing Them – In high-income countries, 14.2% of jobs face high automation risks from generative AI, compared to only 4.5% in low- and middle-income economies where manual labor is more prevalent.
  • Meanwhile, AI can boost productivity for about 16.2% of jobs in developing countries.
  • Service Delivery – AI-driven tools help stretch scarce expertise to wider populations in critical sectors like telemedicine, precision agriculture, and personalized education.
  • For example, agricultural tools can raise productivity by 20–40% and cut input costs (like water and fertilizer) by 30%.
