National Coastal Mission (NCM) 2.0

Why in News?

Recently, Ministry of Environment launched the Guidelines for implementation of National Coastal Mission (NCM) 2.0 on 30 September 2026.

NCM 2.0

• Aim – To strengthen coastal resilience and sustainability and promote India’s Blue Economy.

Blue Economy encompasses sustainable economic activities related to oceans, seas, and coastal resources, with an emphasis on preserving the health of marine ecosystems.

• Key Objectives
  • Enhance coastal resilience
  • Advance ecosystem restoration initiatives
  • Support biodiversity conservation efforts
  • Implement effective pollution management strategies
  • Conduct comprehensive climate vulnerability assessments
  • Foster sustainable tourism development
  • Strengthen integrated spatial planning processes
  • Expand research initiatives and capacity-building programs
  • Encourage sustainable Blue Economy activities

• Implementation Strategy
  • Adoption of a whole-of-government approach
  • Collaboration will be established among the following entities:
    • Central Government
    • Coastal States and Union Territories,
    • Other stakeholders
  • Alignment with existing government schemes
  • Establishment of clear institutional responsibilities
  • Enhanced monitoring mechanisms and accountability measures
  • Development of a streamlined implementation framework
