Why in News?
Recently, the Union Cabinet approved PM-DHARA to strengthen intra-State transmission systems.
PM-Developing Harmonized and Accelerated Renewable-energy Access

- Aim – To facilitate evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy.
- Implementation by – FY 2032-33.
- Financial allocation – Rs.54,082 crore as Central Financial Support.
- This funding is designed to offset intra-State transmission charges.
- The initiative aims to maintain lower electricity costs and provide benefits to consumers.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
|
- A total of 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) will be deployed at the following locations:
- Sites operated by renewable energy developers or generators.
- Other locations that are critical for enhancing grid flexibility.
- Rationale for Deploying BESS
- Mitigates the intermittency associated with renewable energy sources.
- Reduces congestion within the transmission network.
- Decreases curtailment during peak demand periods.
- Provides electricity supply during periods without solar generation.
- Enhances the integration of renewable energy into the electrical grid.

- Alignment with India’s Energy Transition – PM-DHARA facilitates the following objectives:
- Expansion of renewable and non-fossil energy sources
- Enhanced integration of renewable energy into the national grid
- Development and deployment of advanced energy storage solutions
- Strengthening of national energy security
- Reduction of the national carbon footprint
- Achievement of India’s target of 900 GW installed non-fossil energy capacity by 2035
