Why in News?

Recently, The Indian Army has launched an indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) diesel, to enhance combat readiness in extreme cold conditions along the LAC and LoC.

Key Features

  • Temperature Range – Capable of functioning at minus 42°C.
  • Compatibility – Meets BS‑VI standards and IS 1460:2025 specifications; usable across existing Army fleet without modifications.
  • Operational Benefit – Eliminates need for cumbersome winter procedures (e.g., running vehicles periodically to prevent fuel freezing).
  • Development – Jointly developed with oil marketing companies in less than a year.
  • Combat Readiness – Ensures uninterrupted operation of tanks, infantry combat vehicles, and logistics fleet in high‑altitude areas.
  • Mission Reliability – Reduces strain on personnel and machinery; improves engine life.
  • Availability – XWG diesel to be extended to civilians in extreme winter regions.

High‑Altitude Maintenance Facilities

  • Locations – Nyoma and Daulat Beg Oldie (DBO), above 14,500 ft.
  • Fleet Supported – T‑90, T‑72 tanks, BMP‑2K infantry combat vehicles, K‑9 Vajra howitzers.
