Why in news?

Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition has accused the state government for accepting to implement the PM-SHRI Scheme.

  • PM SHRI Schools – Prime Minister’s ScHools for Rising India is a centrally sponsored scheme.
  • Aim – To strengthen select existing schools to provide high-quality education in an equitable, inclusive and joyful school environment.
  • Launched in – 2022.
  • Nodal Ministry – Ministry of Education.
  • Duration - Period of 5 years from year 2022-23 to 2026-27.
  • Implementing Agencies - Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), and State/UT education departments.
  • Objective – To provide equitable, quality, inclusive, and holistic education envisaged by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
  • Salient Features in Practice
    • Holistic, Multidisciplinary Education - Focus on critical thinking, experiential learning, and competency-based education.
    • Integration of vocational and skill-based learning from an early stage.
    • Digital & Smart Infrastructure - Smart classrooms, digital libraries, and use of ICT tools.
    • Emphasis on green schools – Energy-efficient buildings, solar power, waste management, and water conservation.
    • Inclusive & Equitable Learning - Focus on children from diverse socio-economic backgrounds, including divyang (special needs) students.
    • Teacher Empowerment - Continuous professional development through DIKSHA platform and innovative pedagogy training.
    • Assessment Reform -Move away from rote learning to competency-based assessments aligned with NEP 2020.
    • Community and Parental Participation - Local community, alumni, and parents encouraged to engage in school management and improvement.
  • Progress – A total of 33 States/UTs and KVS/NVS have signed the MoU with Ministry of Education for implementation of PM SHRI Scheme.  
  • Some, including West Bengal, Tamil Nadu have had disagreements with the central government regarding the scheme.

Education

  • It is in Concurrent List of the Indian Constitution.
  • Originally on the State List, moved via the 42nd Amendment in 1976.
  • NEP, 2020 – Aims to restructure the school curriculum from a 10+2 to a 5+3+3+4 model.
  • It emphasizes early childhood care, foundational learning, skill development, and multidisciplinary education to reduce dependence on rote memorization.
  • Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan – An overarching program encompassing school education from pre-school to senior secondary level, aimed at providing inclusive and equitable quality education.

    • SWAYAM – Offers Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for school and lifelong learners.
