Why in News?

Recently, the Indian Prime Minister was conferred with Indonesia’s highest civilian honour – the Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia, and key MoUs were signed.

Bintang Republik Indonesia (Star of the Republic of Indonesia)

  • Nature – Highest military and civilian honour of the Republic of Indonesia.
  • Instituted in – 1959.
  • Design – The physical emblem features a distinct shining gold star with rays that symbolise excellence, honour and distinguished service.

Honour of Indonesia

  • Criteria – Awarded to individuals rendering exceptional service to the unity, continuity, and prosperity of Indonesia.
  • Tribute to India‑Indonesia friendship The award is conferred to honour PM Modi’s leadership in advancing bilateral ties.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds the record for the highest number of foreign awards; his tally reached 35 international state and civilian decorations.

Key Memorandum of Understanding Signed During Recent Visit

  • Minerals and steel supply chain cooperation – Investments in mining, advanced extraction technologies, joint studies, strengthening critical mineral supply chains.
  • Maritime safety and security cooperation (extension) – Coast Guard coordination, maritime domain awareness, search and rescue, Indo‑Pacific navigation safety.
  • Rare earth magnets development – NFTDC, Midwest Ltd, and PT PERMINAS have entered into a landmark strategic partnership to collaborate on critical minerals and rare earth element (REE) projects
  • Cooperation on the BrahMos missile system – Showcases the Indian defence industry, Atmanirbhar Bharat, boosts exports and innovation.
  • Air‑to‑air missile cooperation agreement – Enhances defence exports and strengthens the missile development ecosystem.
  • Strategic Joint Venture – SAIL and Pt. Krakatau Steel – Stainless‑steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia.
  • Outer space cooperation – Joint research, technology sharing, and capacity building reinforce a three-decade space partnership.
  • Conservation of Prambanan Temple Complex, Yogyakarta – Heritage preservation under Vikas bhi Virasat bhi.
  • Agriculture and allied sectors cooperation – Sustainable farming, machinery, and joint studies; food security and farmer incomes.
  • IIM Bangalore Branch Campus – New international campus of IIM Bangalore is being established at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
