Why in News?

Recently, at Pattinamarudhar Village in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, around 1,500 artefacts have been unearthed.

  • Excavation done by - Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology (TNSDA)

Discoveries

  • Excavation –Have yielded ancient coins, porcelain pottery fragments, shell ornaments & Figurines.
  • Also witnessed successive cultural phases & acted as a thriving coastal trade center.
  • Historical Counterpart – Experts suggested that Pattinamarudhur’s trade significance could be on par with Korkai, a famous ancient port.

Historical Eco-System of Tamil Nadu

  • Korkai – An ancient port city of Sangam Age & Early Commercial Center & Capital of Early Pandyas.
  • Accounts - Mentioned in Sangam Literature & Ptolemy’s accounts.
  • Located – On the Month of River Thamirabarani, Thoothukudi District.
  • Renowned – For Trade with Roman Empire & Far East and Pearl fishing.

 

Adichanallur (Megalthic/Iron Age site)

  • Located in – Thoothukudi District along the River Thamirabarani.
  • Significates – Major urn-burial site showcasing advanced Iron Age Culture.
