- India is also exploring Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as an emerging nuclear technology.
- SMRs generally have a capacity of up to 300 MWe and are designed to enable modular manufacturing, potentially reducing construction time and improving standardisation.
- Under the Nuclear Energy Mission announced in the Union Budget 2025–26, ₹20,000 crore has been allocated for research, design, development and deployment of indigenous SMRs.
- India is developing technologies including the 220 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200), the 55 MWe SMR-55, and a High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor aimed at applications such as hydrogen production.
- SMRs could have applications beyond conventional grid electricity, including remote-area power supply, replacement of retiring coal plants, industrial process heat and hydrogen production.
