Why in News?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Bagurumba Dwhou 2026 cultural programme in Guwahati, Assam.

  • Bagurumba Dohou refers to a historic, mass-scale cultural performance of the traditional Bagurumba dance of the Bodo community in Assam.
  • Location – Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati, Assam.
  • Traditional Roots - It is often called as the “butterfly dance”, for its graceful and flowing movements inspired by butterflies, birds, leaves and flowers.
  • Attire - Bodo women perform the dance wearing colorful handwoven Dokhna, Jwmgra (Fasra), and Aronai.
  • Performances are usually in groups, arranged in circles or lines.
  • Instrumentation - The dance is accompanied by male musicians playing traditional instruments like the Sifung (bamboo flute), Kham (drum), Serja, and Tharkha.
  • Key Highlights, 2026 – Over 10,000 Bodo artists performed in a single synchronised presentation, making it one of the largest cultural gatherings of its kind.
  • Cultural Significance – It is inspired by nature and symbolises blooming flowers and represents peace, fertility, joy and collective harmony.
  • It enables talented Bodo youth to emerge as cultural ambassadors.
  • Associated Festivals
    • Closely linked with Bwisagu (Bodo New Year).
    • Also associated with Domasi.
  • Historical Context – This cultural revival replaces earlier periods of violence and unrest.
  • The 2020 Bodo Peace Accord, which ended decades of conflict.
  • The accord restored trust and enabled thousands of youths to give up violence and join the mainstream.
