Why in News?
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Bagurumba Dwhou 2026 cultural programme in Guwahati, Assam.
Bagurumba Dohou refers to a historic, mass-scale cultural performance of the traditional Bagurumba dance of the Bodo community in Assam.
Location – Sarusajai Stadium, Guwahati, Assam.
Traditional Roots - It is often called as the “butterfly dance”, for its graceful and flowing movements inspired by butterflies, birds, leaves and flowers.
Attire -Bodo women perform the dance wearing colorful handwoven Dokhna, Jwmgra (Fasra), and Aronai.
Performances are usually in groups, arranged in circles or lines.
Instrumentation - The dance is accompanied by male musicians playing traditional instruments like the Sifung (bamboo flute), Kham (drum), Serja, and Tharkha.
Key Highlights, 2026 –Over 10,000 Bodo artists performed in a single synchronised presentation, making it one of the largest cultural gatherings of its kind.
Cultural Significance – It is inspired by nature and symbolises blooming flowers and represents peace, fertility, joy and collective harmony.
It enables talented Bodo youth to emerge as cultural ambassadors.

Closely linked with Bwisagu (Bodo New Year).
Also associated with Domasi.
Historical Context – This cultural revival replaces earlier periods of violence and unrest.
The 2020 Bodo Peace Accord, which ended decades of conflict.
The accord restored trust and enabled thousands of youths to give up violence and join the mainstream.
