Why in News?

President Droupadi Murmu to Confer National Geoscience Awards 2024 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

• The National Geoscience Awards are among the country’s oldest and most prestigious honors in the field of geosciences.
• Originally known as the National Mineral Awards until 2009.
• Objective - To honor individuals and teams for extraordinary achievements and outstanding contributions in various fields of geosciences.
• Instituted in – 1966.
• Instituted by - The Ministry of Mines.
• Award categories –
  • National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement,
  • National Geoscience Award and
  • National Young Geoscientist Award.

• Eligibility – Indian citizen with significant contribution in any field of geosciences is eligible for this award.
• Awardees, 2024 - 12 awards have been finalized under these 3award categories, which include 09 individual and 03 team awards.
