Why in News?
President Droupadi Murmu to Confer National Geoscience Awards 2024 at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
- The National Geoscience Awards are among the country’s oldest and most prestigious honors in the field of geosciences.
- Originally known as the National Mineral Awards until 2009.
- Objective - To honor individuals and teams for extraordinary achievements and outstanding contributions in various fields of geosciences.
- Instituted in – 1966.
- Instituted by - The Ministry of Mines.
- Award categories –
- National Geoscience Award for Lifetime Achievement,
- National Geoscience Award and
- National Young Geoscientist Award.
- Eligibility – Indian citizen with significant contribution in any field of geosciences is eligible for this award.
- Awardees, 2024 - 12 awards have been finalized under these 3award categories, which include 09 individual and 03 team awards.
