Key findings, 2025

  • Global TB Status – Causing over 1.2 million deaths and affecting an estimated 10.7 million people globally in 2024.
  • India (leads with 25%), followed by Indonesia (10%), Philippines (6.8%), China (6.5%), Pakistan (6.3%), Nigeria (4.8%), DR Congo (3.9%) & Bangladesh (3.6%).

India’s Performance –

  • Decline in TB incidence – Declines 21% from 237 cases per lakh population in 2015 to 187 per lakh in 2024 — nearly double the global decline rate of 12% (one of the highest declines in TB incidence globally).
    • Despite these gains, India’s current TB incidence is still far from its elimination target of 44 cases per 100,000 by 2025, an 80% reduction goal.
  • Decline in TB mortality rate – Decreased from 28 per lakh population in 2015 to 21 per lakh population in 2024.
  • Improved treatment coverage – Rose from 53% in 2015 to over 92% in 2024 because of India’s innovative case finding approach by uptake of newer technologies, decentralization, etc.
  • High cases detection – In 2024, 26.18 lakh TB patients were diagnosed - the estimated total TB cases in 2024 were 27 lakh, indicating high detection efficiency.
  • Drop in unreported cases – Dropped from 15 lakh in 2015 to less than 1 lakh in 2024 due to improved detection and reporting efforts.
  • Multidrug-Resistant (MDR) TB cases – Saw no major rise in India, accounts for 32% of global MDR-TB cases.
  • Achievement - TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan –
    • Treatment success rate in India – Is 90% which is higher than the global average of 88%.
    • Screened over 19 crore vulnerable people across India for TB, led to the detection of over 24.5 lakh TB patients, among them, 8.61 lakh were asymptomatic cases (showing no symptoms).
