Why in the News?

Union Government has successfully secured India’s fertilizer supply chain for Kharif Season 2026 through aggressive spot buying, Unprecedented advance Stocking & Strategic Global tendering, despite west Asian crisis.

Intervention

• Natural Gas – Restoration of nearly 97% of natural gas requirement for Domestic Fertilizers units through buying, it’s a massive jump from just 65% at the beginning of the west Asian crisis.
• Bypassing Geopolitical Chokepoints – India bypassed strait of Hormuz by floating strategic global tenders outside the region, securing safely 2.5 Million tonnes of Urea to meet Peak Kharif Demand.
• Pre-Season Stocking – Fertilizer requirement for Kharif season 2026 is at 39 Million Tonnes.
• As of April, 2026 an unprecedented 18 million tonnes was already available as opening stock.

Secured Nutrient Imports – To increased domestic availability, 1.35 million tonnes of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) & 0.7 million tonnes of N – Nitrogen, P – Phosphorus, K – Potassium (NKP) are scheduled to reach ports of India by May & June 2026.

• Tendering – Indian Fertilizer companies issued aggregate global tenders for essential components, like Triple Super Steel Phosphate (TSP) sulphar, ammonium Sulphate, & Ammonia.
• State-Specific Focus - Uttar Pradesh
• Urea Availability - Stands at 1.87 million tonnes against a pro-rata requirement of 0.76 million tonnes.
• DAP Availability - Reached 0.62 million tonnes against a requirement of 0.15 million tonnes.

 Strait of Hormuz

• Location - A narrow, strategically vital waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
• Geopolitical Significance - It separates Iran to the north from Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the south.
• It is considered the world's most important oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transit chokepoint, making alternative supply sourcing outside this strait crucial during West Asian conflicts.
