Why in news?

The 22nd Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-III Conference was concluded in Nagaland.

  • Commonwealth Parliamentary Association It is an international community of around 180 Commonwealth Parliaments and Legislatures working to promote democratic governance.
  • CPA India Region – It is a major branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA).
  • Secretariat – Within the Lok Sabha at the Parliament of India.
  • Chairperson – Speaker of the Lok Sabha, currently Om Birla.
  • Composition – It comprises 31 branches, making it the 2nd-largest CPA region globally.
  • Zones – Divided into 9 zones for administrative and regional coordination:
    • Zone I - Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand
    • Zone II - Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, Punjab
    • Zone III - Northeastern states (e.g., Nagaland, Assam, Manipur)
    • Zone IV–IX - Cover remaining states including Odisha, Bihar, MP, Maharashtra, Karnataka, etc.
  • Objectives & Functions
    • Promote democratic values and legislative best practices.
    • Facilitate dialogue among legislators on regional and national issues.
    • Organize annual conferences, workshops, and study tours.
    • Encourage capacity building and policy innovation in state legislatures.
