Why in News?

Recently, Belwa–Minapur Link Channel (Belwadhar), part of the Bagmati–Budhi Gandak River Interlinking Project was inaugurated.

Project Overview

  • Bagmati–Budhi Gandak River interlinking project – Bihar’s 1st river‑linking project, an intrastate initiative in Bihar aimed at mitigating catastrophic monsoon floods in North Bihar.
  • Belwa-Minapur Link Channel Route – Part of the Bagmati Flood Management Project.
  • Route starts from Belwa Ghat (Sheohar district, Pipra block) to Minapur (Muzaffarpur district).
  • Function – Diverts surplus water from Bagmati River to Budhi Gandak River to manage excess floodwater.
  • Flood Management – Reduce flood intensity in Sheohar, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran.
  • Benefits – Enhance irrigation capacity, boost agricultural productivity, encourage fisheries and improves groundwater levels.

Irrigation Coverage by District

  • Sheohar District – Piprahi, Dumri Katsari, Tariyani, Sheohar blocks.
  • Muzaffarpur District – Minapur, Gaighat, Chhoncha, Bandara, Mushari.
  • East Champaran – Patahi, Phenhara, Tetariya, Madhuban, Pakadiyal blocks.
  • Samastipur – Kalyanpur block.
