Why in News?

The India’s overall workforce participation rate (WPR) for age 15 years and above increased to 52.8 per cent in August.

  • It was the highest level recorded since March, 2026.
  • Released by – Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
  • Purpose – PLFS is the primary source of data on activity participation and employment and unemployment conditions of the population.
  • Monthly results of PLFS are released in the form of Monthly Bulletins.
  • It presents estimates of key labour market indicators –  
  • Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) measures the percentage of the working-age population that is either working or actively looking for a job.
  • Worker Population Ratio (WPR) is the percentage of employed people out of the total population.
  • A person is unemployed if they did not work but actively sought or was available for work.
  • Current Weekly Status (CWS)
    • Reference Period: Uses the last 7 days preceding the survey date.
    • Employed Status: A person is employed if they worked for at least 1 hour on any day of the reference week.
