Temporary Discontinuation of Rice Fortification
Government of India has temporarily halted rice fortification under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) and allied welfare schemes.
-
Rice varieties – Fortified rice kernels (FRK) and fortified rice (FR).
-
Reason –
-
FRK and FR lose micronutrients during prolonged storage due to factors like moisture, temperature, humidity, and packaging.
-
This reduces their effective shelf life and limits nutritional benefits.
-
Impact – No change in foodgrain entitlements; PDS, ICDS, and Mid-Day Meal remain unaffected.
-
Transition – States/UTs may distribute fortified or non-fortified rice for KMS 2025–26 and pending 2024–25 stocks.
-
Next Step – Fortification will resume only after a stronger nutrient delivery system is developed.
