History, Art and Culture

Vishwakarma Jayanti

  • It is a Hindu festival honouring Lord Vishwakarma, deity of creation, architecture, and mechanical work.
  • Observed between – September 16 & 18, according to the Gregorian calendar, which is the last day of Bhado month.
  • Significance – It is observed across India by craftsmen, architects, engineers, and mechanics etc.

Chhath Festival

India Seeks UNESCO Recognition for 'Chhath.'

  • It is a major Hindu festival, dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya (ancient Vedic Goddess Usha).
  • It is also known as Surya Shashti, a bathing festival followed by four days of abstinence and ritual purity.
  • It is the only occasion where the setting sun is worshipped along with the rising sun.
  • Celebrated on – 6th day of Kartik month.
  • Celebrated in – Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Social Issues

Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan

  • It is the 16-day nationwide health camp for women and children along with the 8th Poshan Maah.
  • Jointly led by – Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD).
  • Organised at – Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Community Health centres, district hospitals and other government health facilities.
  • Health camps – More than 1 lakh health camps will be organised, making this the largest ever health outreach for women and children in the country.
  • Covers – Health check-ups and screening camps for non-communicable diseases such as cancers, anaemia, tuberculosis, and sickle cell disease.

Poshan Maah

  • It is a nationwide celebration dedicated to promoting nutrition awareness and driving action towards building a healthier India.
  • It is a part of the larger Jan Andolan (people’s movement) to promote nutrition literacy, healthy practices, and behaviour change.
  • Launched in – 2018
  • Conducted annually in – September
  • Objectives  
    • To reduce in consumption of oil and sugar to reduce obesity,
    • Early childhood care and education,
    • Infant and young child feeding practices,
    • To involve men in nutrition and care of women and children across Anganwadi Centres nationwide,
    • To promote local diet and food systems, and convergent actions and digitization.

Genocide Convention

UN Commission alleges Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

  • An international treaty that defines genocide and obliges signatory states to prevent and punish it.
  • Legal basis – Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, 1948.
  • It lists five acts that constitute genocide when committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.

Polity & Governance

ECI’s Revised Guidelines

ECI revises guidelines to make EVM Ballot Papers more readable.

  • Guidelines under – Rule 49B of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, for the design and printing of EVM Ballot Papers to enhance their clarity and readability.
  • Colour photographs – It will be printed in colour on the EVM Ballot Paper.
  • Better visibility – The candidate’s face will occupy 3/4 of the photo space.

Right to Freedom of Religion

Recently, Supreme Court questioned who determines if a religious conversion is 'deceitful' while hearing pleas against stringent state anti-conversion laws.

  • Article 25 – All persons are equally entitled to freedom of conscience and the right freely to profess, practice, and propagate religion, subject to public order, morality, and health.
  • Judicial review – The power of the judiciary to examine the constitutionality of legislative enactments and executive orders of both the Central and State governments.

Security

 Delivery of DSC A20 (YARD 325)

  • It is designed to undertake diving operations in coastal waters and is being fitted with state-of-the-art diving equipment.
  • Features – It has a catamaran hull, with a displacement of approx 380 tons.
  • Indigenously designed & built under – Naval Rules and Regulations of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
  • Delivered by – M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (TRSL), Kolkata.

20th World Athletics Championships 2025

Sarvesh Kushare is the 1st Indian high jumper to reach World Championship finals.

  • Held in – Tokyo, Japan.
  • Organised by – World Athletics, the global governing body of the sport.
  • Motto – Every Second Sugoi.
  • Sugoi – it means "amazing," "awesome," "fantastic," or "incredible".
  • 1st world Athletics championship in – 1983 in Helsinki.
  • Conducted biennially – Since 1991.
  • Conducted in odd years – To avoid clashing with the Olympic Games, which take place on a quadrennial basis in even years.

World Patient Safety Day

  • Observed on – 17th September.
  • Slogan 2025 – “Patient safety from the start!”.
  • Aim – To ensuring safe care for every newborn and child, with a special focus on those from birth to nine years old.
  • Significance – It is a global effort to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.
