GI Tag Application Fee Reduction

A reduction in the Geographical Indication (GI) tag application fee from Rs.5,000 to Rs.1,000.

  • Announced by – Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Corbett National Park

The Supreme Court's strong rebuke to the Uttarakhand High Court for interfering in a CBI probe related to illegal tree-felling in Jim Corbett National Park.

  • It is not only the 1st national park in India, but also the 1st to come under the Project Tiger initiative.
  • Originally established as – Hailey National Park in 1936, is a jewel in the crown of India's wildlife conservation efforts.
  • Located in – Nainital district of Uttarakhand.
  • Historical background – Between 1954-1955, it is renamed Ramganga National Park.
  • Again, renamed in 1956, in honour of Jim Corbett, a hunter-turned-naturalist who played a crucial role in its establishment, the park is a living testament to conservation success.
  • Part of – The World-Wide Fund for Nature's Terai Arc Landscape Program, aimed at protecting flagship species like the tiger, the Asian elephant, and the great one-horned rhinoceros.
  • Corbett Tiger Reserve has the highest density of tigers in the world, making it a crucial location for the survival and growth of this endangered species.

Pig Butchering Scam

  • It is a type of investment fraud that involves scammers creating fake online personas to lure victims into fraudulent investment schemes.
  • Term – "pig butchering" comes from the scammers' practice of "fattening up" their victims by building trust over time before "slaughtering" them and stealing their money.
  • Digital Deception – Scammers use social engineering techniques, artificial intelligence, and technology to gain trust, manipulate emotions, and exploit financial vulnerabilities to steal money.
  • Real-life examples show the devastating financial and emotional impact on victims.

Retail prices rose just 0.25% lowest ever recorded in October.

  • Retail inflation, also known as Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation.
  • The CPI tracks the change in retail prices of goods and services which households purchase for their daily consumption.
  • CPI formula = Price of basket in current period / Price of basket in base period x 100

Invasive Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes)

Invasive water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) is causing significant ecological and economic damage in El Salvador's El Cerron Grande reservoir.

  • An invasive species is an introduced, nonnative organism (disease, parasite, plant, or animal) that begins to spread or expand its range from the site of its original introduction and that has the potential to cause harm to the environment, the economy, or to human health.
  • Illustrations in India – Water hyacinth (*Eichhornia crassipes*), Lantana camara, Parthenium hysterophorus, African Apple Snail.

‘Doomsday’ Missile

Russia has unveiled its new nuclear submarine, 'Khabarovsk', armed with the 'Poseidon' nuclear drone.

  • 'Khabarovsk' – it is a nuclear submarine in Severodvinsk.
  • Launched by - Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov.
  • Weapon System - Poseidon nuclear drone also known as 'Doomsday missile'.
  • Features –
    • Nature - Nuclear-powered, nuclear-armed underwater drone.
    • Competence - Designed to deliver a massive nuclear warhead, capable of creating radioactive tsunamis and "wiping out" coastal nations.
  • Significance – It is a part of Russia's strategic deterrence arsenal, aimed at maintaining nuclear parity and projecting power.

White-Collar Terrorism

White-Collar Crime

A white-collar terror network involves highly educated professionals, such as doctors or engineers, who are radicalized and used to plan or execute terrorist activities.

 

White-collar crime is generally non-violent in nature and includes public corruption, health care fraud, mortgage fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering, etc

Exploiting their trusted status, these individuals can procure materials, travel freely, and operate under minimal scrutiny, making such networks harder to detect and increasingly sophisticated in executing attacks.

For example – It can destroy a company, devastate families by wiping out their life savings, or cost investors billions of dollars (or even all three).

 

Exercise Maru Jwala (“desert flame”)

  • This exercise is a part of the ongoing tri-services "Trishul" drill, showcasing the preparedness and coordination of elite units.
  • Held in – Rajasthan's Jaisalmer, close to the border with Pakistan.
  • Aim – To demonstrate the synergised capabilities of the armed forces in planning and executing complex airborne operations.

  • The specific date of June 1st wasn't universally adopted until the 1950s.
  • Commemoration to – The UNGA's adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 as well as the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in 1989.
  • Aim – To raise awareness of the global predicament of children.
  • UNICEF advocates to protect every child's right without discrimination.
