Default Bail

Supreme Court recently said that accused persons cannot claim default bail for non-filing of additional copies of the charge sheet.

  • Default bail – It is also known as statutory or compulsive bail.

    • Indefeasible right – It arises if the charge sheet is not filed within the statutory period.

    • Statutory Deadline – It applies only if the charge sheet is not filed within 60 or 90 days of investigation.

    • Once the charge sheet is filed, the right to default bail ends.

  • Provisions –

    • Section 187(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

    • Constitutional rights under Article 21.

  • Significance – It marks of the nation's economic rebound following its recent financial crisis.

  • Objective – It is dedicated to reducing poverty and building shared prosperity.

Amending Drugs Rules, 1945

Central government has amended the Drugs Rules, 1945.

  • Objective – To strengthen regulatory oversight of advanced and emerging medical technologies.

  • To ensure uniform regulation across India through the Centrally Licence Approving Authority (CLAA) framework.

  • Expansion of Regulatory Scope

    • Stem cell-derived products – It includes regenerative treatments and CAR-T cell therapies for leukaemias and lymphomas, are now included.

    • Gene therapeutic products – Such as gene replacement and gene-editing therapies for genetic disorders and cancers, are also covered.

    • Xenografts – A animal tissue-derived products such as heart valves used in cardiology and orthopaedics, fall within the expanded regulatory scope.

  • Legal basis

    • Governed by – Drugs and Cosmetics Act.

    • Certain critical drugs are already subject to joint Centre and State regulation, including:

      • Vaccines.

      • Large volume parenterals (>100 ml IV solutions).

      • r-DNA-based medicines.

    • Amendment expands this list to include advanced cell and gene therapies.

  • Significance – It reinforces India’s regulatory framework in line with global best practices in emerging technologies.
