Why in News?

The South-North Commission on Development was formally launched on June 30, 2026, at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference.

  • Aim - To rewrite the rules of global engagement by moving past traditional, outdated donor-recipient models.
  • Co-Chairs - The independent global commission is co-chaired by Olaf Scholz (former German Chancellor) and Laura Chinchilla (former President of Costa Rica).
  • Composition - It will bring together up to 20 commissioners drawn from politics, business, labor, academia, international organisations, and civil society, with a majority represented by the Global South.
  • Legacy Model - The initiative is explicitly modelled after the historic 1977 Brandt Commission, reviving its spirit to address systemic global inequalities in an increasingly multipolar world.
  • Timeline- The commission is expected to present an interim report in 2027 and a final report by the end of 2028.
  • Interconnected Global Challenges
    • The Fiscal & Debt Crisis
    • Trade Inequities & Value Chains
    • Redefining "North" and "South" Labels
    • Technology, Climate, and Emerging Leverage
