Why in News?
SENIOR IPS officer Sanjukta Parasor has taken charge as Inspector General of the Central Reserve Police Force’s elite CoBRA unit.
- Sanjukta Parashar is the first woman to head CRPF’s CoBRA commando unit.
- She is called as ‘Iron Lady of Assam’, for her counter-insurgency work in the Northeast.
- CoBRA, or Commando Battalion for Resolute Action, is one of CRPF’s most specialised operational formations.
- The COBRA trained for long-range patrols, intelligence-based operations, ambushes, counter-ambushes and operations in areas where explosive devices a major threat.
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)
- It is India's largest central armed police force.
- It is operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs to maintain internal security and law and order.
- The Rapid Action Force (RAF) is a specialised unit under the CRPF.
- It was formed in October 1992, as a riot control force to deal with communal and related civil unrest.
