Why in news?

The Government of India announces Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar 2025, nation’s highest recognition in the field of Science & Technology - with 24 individual awards and one team award.

  • Aim – To recognize outstanding and inspiring contributions by scientists, technologists, and innovators in diverse fields of science, technology, and technology-led innovation.
  • It is also known as – National Science Award.
  • Administered by – Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
  • 4 categories –

Recognition

Vigyan Ratna (VR)

Recognize lifetime achievements & contributions made in any field of science and technology.

Vigyan Shri (VS)

Recognize distinguished contributions in any field of science and technology.

Vigyan Yuva - Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar (VY-SSB)

Recognize & encourage young scientists up to the age of 45 years who have made an exceptional contribution in any field of science and technology.

Vigyan Team (VT)

Given to a team comprising three or more scientists/researchers/innovators who have made an exceptional contribution working in a team in any field of science and technology.

  • 13 domains – Physics, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Mathematics & Computer Science, Earth Science, Medicine, Engineering Sciences, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Technology & Innovation, Atomic Energy, Space Science & Technology, and other allied fields.
  • Selection Committee – Rashtriya Vigyan Puraskar Committee (RVPC) to be headed by the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to Government of India and comprising Secretaries.
  • Presented by – The award was presented by President of India.
