Estimation of Carbon Stock in Mangrove Eco-system

  • Conducted by – Forest Survey of India (FSI) under Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

  • Coverage – Across all 12 states and Union Territories where mangrove forests are found.

  •  Significance – It aids in planning of Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats & Tangible Incomes (MISHTI) scheme.

Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats & Tangible Incomes (MISHTI) scheme

  • Launched on – 5th June, 2023 on the occasion of World Environment Day by Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change.

  • Aim – To envisage the restoration of mangroves spreading across 9 states and 3 union territories.

  • Time period – 5 years commencing 2023-24 onwards.

  • Primary focus – Sundarbans delta, Hooghly estuary in West Bengal, and other bay parts of the country.

  • Financial assistance – To local communities to undertake mangrove plantation activities.

Ban On Import of Waste Tyres

  • Notified under – Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) (HOWM) Rules, 2016, Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

  • Nodal ministry – Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

  • Aim – To ensure safe storage, treatment and disposal of hazardous and other wastes in an environmentally sound manner.

Security

Expansion of NavIC-based Early Warning System

  • Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) based early warning services for major natural disasters.

  • Nodal Ministry – Ministry of Earth Sciences.

  • Operationalised under – Common Alerting Protocol Based Integrated Alert System (SACHET).

  • Coverage – Indian Territory and surrounding 1500 km of Indian borders.

SACHET National Disaster Alert Portal

  • Aim – Real-time dissemination of early warning through multiple means of technology using geo-intelligence.

  • Administered by – National Disaster Management Authority(NDMA).

  • Languages – Currently available 12 Indian languages.

  • Recognized by – India Meteorological Department, Central Water Commission, Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment, Forest Survey of India & various State Disaster Management Authorities.

C-Flood Unified Inundation Forecasting System

  • It is a web-based C-Flood platform.

  • Launched by – Ministry of Jal Shakti.

  • Aim – To provide 2 days advance inundation forecasts up to village level in the form of inundation maps and water level predictions.

  • Features – Advanced 2D hydrodynamic modelling with extent and depth information.

  • Unified inundation information system integrating flood modelling outputs from national and regional agencies for all river basins.

  • 3 categories of flood alerts – Yellow, Orange and Red based on the inundation depth.

Exploration of Polymetallic Nodules (PMN)

  • PMN – It is also called manganese nodules, are rock concretions formed of concentric layers of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core.

  • It encompasses precious metals like copper, nickel and cobalt.

  • Signed in – 2002, in the Central Indian Ocean Basin.

  • Signed between – Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), India with International Seabed Authority (ISA).

Exploration of Polymetallic Sulphides (PMS)

  • PMS deposits are rich sources of metals such as copper, zinc, iron, gold, and silver, found on the ocean floor.

  • Formation – These deposits occur in regions where hot, mineral-rich fluids from the Earth's mantle are expelled into the ocean, leading to the precipitation of metal sulphides.

  • Signed in – 2016, in an allocated area of 10,000 sq. km. in South-West Indian Ocean Ridge.

  • Signed between – Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) with International Seabed Authority (ISA).

Li-Ion Battery Recycling Technology

  • Indigenously developed by – Centre for Material for Electronics Technology (C-MET).

  • Nodal ministry – Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

  • Umbrella programme – Mission Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE) under the "Promote circularity campaign."
