Why in news?

Recently, Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano erupts, sending ash cloud 18 kilometers in air.

  • It is one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes.
  • It has erupted multiple times.
  • It is an active stratovolcano in Indonesia's Flores Island, part of pacific ring of fire.
  • The volcano is part of a twin-peaked system called Lewotobi, meaning "husband and wife."
  • It consists of the Lewotobi Lakilaki (man) and Lewotobi Perempuan (woman) stratovolcanoes, whose summit craters are located less than 2 km apart on Flores Island.

  • Recent EruptionThe recent eruption sending a column of volcanic materials as high as 18 kilometres into the sky and depositing ash on villages.
  • Indonesia's Geology Agency recorded an avalanche of searing gas clouds mixed with rocks and lava travelling up to 5 kilometres down the volcano's slopes during the eruption.
  • Largest eruption - The July 2025 eruption was one of Indonesia's largest eruptions since 2010 when Mount Merapi was erupted.
  • The volcano monitoring agency had increased the alert status to the highest level after this eruption, and more than doubled an exclusion zone to a 7-kilometre radius since then.

Mount Merapi located in Yogyakarta, Indonesia's most volatile volcano erupted on the densely populated island of Java.
