Why in news?

Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region chaired the  review meeting on development of Matabari Tourism Circuit development in Tripura.

  • Aim – To transform Tripura into a vibrant hub of cultural, spiritual and eco-tourism by connecting key heritage and nature sites across the state.
  • The project forms part of the Prime Minister Modi’s vision of transforming Northeast India into a vibrant global tourism hub.

About the Circuit

  • It is a 4-night, 5-day itinerary designed to showcase Tripura’s rich cultural heritage, scenic landscapes, and spiritual landmarks.
  • It includes:
    • Agartala – the state capital and gateway to Tripura
    • Neer Mahal – a stunning lake palace blending Hindu and Mughal architecture
    • Sepahijala – known for its wildlife sanctuary and botanical gardens
    • Udaipur – home to the revered Tripura Sundari Temple (Matabari)
    • Chabimura – famous for its rock carvings on steep hill faces
    • Dumboor Lake – a picturesque spot with islands and boating options
  • Government Support – The Central government has assured funding support for key developmental components of the circuit.

Other key development priorities

  • Boosting international connectivity – At Agartala’s Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport, with potential new routes to Southeast Asia.
  • Revamping heritage sites – Like Neer Mahal, Tepania, Jampui Pura, and Udaipur to enhance conservation and tourist amenities.
  • Developing Dumbur Islands – Via Public-Private Partnerships to attract eco-friendly investments and recreation.
  • Launching river-based tourism and eco-resorts in line with sustainable development goals.
