Why in News?
The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) has designated the Kawal Tiger Reserve in Telangana as a "priority recipient site" for tiger recovery.
Key Highlights
- Kawal currently has no resident tiger population.
- It has been categorized under Stage 1 (Habitat and Prey Recovery) of the ecological recovery continuum.
- Although the reserve historically supported tigers and periodically receives dispersing individuals from neighboring areas, it lacks a self-sustaining breeding population.
Ecological Constraints
- Depressed Prey Base- Prey density remains low (recorded at 3.9 chital, 4.17 nilgai, and 3.5 wild pigs per sq km).
- Fragmented Corridors - Disruption and fragmentation in forest corridors, particularly those connecting to Maharashtra’s Tadoba–Andhari landscape, hinder natural tiger movement.
- Strategic Location - Located in the Godavari basin, Kawal forms a crucial ecological link between the tiger landscapes of Central India and the Eastern Ghats.
Reintroduction Strategy (Vision 2047)
- Prior to active translocation or reintroduction, the roadmap specifies that habitat quality, prey abundance, corridor connectivity, and anti-poaching measures must be substantially improved.
