Why in News?

The Historic Kakori Train Action marks 100 years, advocates the descendants of those revolutionaries for an academic focus so future generations understand their forefathers' sacrifices for India's freedom.

  • Occurred in – August 9, 1925.
  • Location – Kakori railway station, about 15 km from Lucknow
  • Events – The number 8 Down Train was travelling for Shahjahanpur to Lucknow.
  • When train was passed kakori village, Rajendra Lahiri pulled the emergency chain to stop.
  • Revolutionaries entered the train and looted a money (containing approximately Rs. 4600) which was being transferred to the British treasury.
  • Aim – Looting the money to buy arms for their revolution against the British government.
  • Organized by – Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).
  • Key personalities involved – Around 10 members of HRA, including Ram Prasad Bismil, Chandrasekar Azad, Ashfaqullah Khan, Thakur Roshan Singh and Rajendranath Lahiri.
  • Consequences - In 1927, Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqullah Khan, Thakur Roshan Singh, and Rajendranath Lahiri were hanged to death by the British government.
  • Recognition by government – In 2021, the Uttar Pradesh government renamed the revolutionary event as the Kakori train action, replacing earlier terms like Kakori train robbery or the Kakori conspiracy.

Quick facts

  • HRA – Hindustan Republican Association was established in 1924 as a radical revolutionary organization, led by Ram prasad bismil, Ashfaqulla khan, Sachindra nath bakshi, Sachindranath sanyal and Jogesh chandra chatterjee.
  • Their manifesto is titled Krantikari (Revolutionary), was published on January 1, 1925.
  • HRSA – The HRA merged with various other revolutionary group in Punjab, Bihar and Bengal and become Hindustan Socialist Republican Association in 1928 after execution of kakori conspiracy revolutionaries.
