Why in News?
Recently, the External Affairs Minister signed the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime.
UN Convention against Cybercrime
- It is described by the UN as the first comprehensive global treaty on cybercrime.
- Aim – To strengthen global cooperation to prevent and combat cybercrime.
- Objectives
- Combating Cybercrime – It establishes measures for countries to:
- Prevent cybercrime
- Combat cyber offences
- Enhance criminal investigations that involve information and communication technologies (ICTs).
- Facilitate international cooperation,
- Enable cross-border investigations,
- Support the sharing of electronic evidence, and
- Promote the prosecution and recovery of criminal proceeds.
- Significance – It adapts traditional criminal investigation methods to address the complexities introduced by information and communication technologies.
- It seeks to address both:
- Technical challenges arising from digital technologies.
- Legal/jurisdictional challenges created by transnational cybercrime.
