  • Stated Rationale – Women raised concerns about children's excessive screen time, while elders argued that women do not require smartphones for professional purposes.
  • Underlying Societal Issues – The ban reflects attempts to control women's autonomy, concerns about maintaining perceived moral standards, and fears that social media may facilitate inter-community relationships and disrupt traditional marriage arrangements, such as the satta-watta system.
  • Retraction of the Ban – The ban was rescinded following widespread public outrage, significant backlash on social media, and intervention by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
  • NHRC Response – The NHRC took cognisance of the incident and issued a notice to the District Magistrate of Jalore, requesting a detailed report.
  • Gender-Based Digital Divide – In rural India, there is a pronounced gender gap in mobile phone ownership, with 80.7% of men owning mobile phones compared to only 48.45% of women.
  • Impact on Education – Girls frequently discontinue their education due to responsibilities such as household chores and agricultural work, as well as concerns about being perceived as 'too educated' relative to men.
