Social Issues

Saras Aajeevika Melas

  • Organised by – Ministry of Rural Development under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM).
  • Aim – To provide rural women and self-help groups a national platform to sell their products directly, eliminate middlemen, and gain vital market exposure.
  • Significance - It equips them with skills to upgrade their products, increase incomes, and connect with buyers from across the country and beyond.

Polity & Governance

Welfare of Plantation Workers

  • Regulated by – The respective State Governments under the Plantations Labour Act, 1951.
  • Subsumed under – Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020 and the Code on Social Security, 2020.
  • Objectives – To provide workers with housing, medical care, sickness and maternity benefits, and other social security measures.
  • They also mandate facilities such as educational support for workers’ children, drinking water, conservancy arrangements, canteens, crèches, and recreational amenities for the welfare of tea plantation workers and their families in and around the estates.
  • Other legal status – The Code on Wages, 2019; the Industrial Relations Code, 2020.

International Relations and Issues

UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)

  • Adopted in – 2003 convention, by UNESCO in its 32nd General Conference in Paris.
  • Execution – The Intergovernmental Committee advances the goals of the 2003 Convention and ensures its effective implementation across Member States.
  • India’s term – It has served on the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for 3 terms.
  • UNESCO Representative list – Currently, 15 Indian elements have been inscribed on it.

3rd Australia-India Education and Skills Council (AIESC)

  • Held in – New Delhi.
  • Objectives – To strengthen Early Childhood Care and Education, advance mutual recognition frameworks in school education and build stronger teacher development pathways.
  • To deepen with discussions on shaping future education and skill ecosystems, new MoUs and Letter of Intent (LoIs) to boost research and industry-academia partnerships.

‘Growing Retail Digital Payments (The Value of Interoperability)’

  • Report by – International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  • Highlights – It recognized Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as the world’s largest retail fast-payment system (FPS) by transaction volume.

‘Prime Time for Real-Time’ 2024

  • Report by – ACI Worldwide
  • Highlights – UPI has around 49% share in the global real-time payment system transaction volume.

Environment

Ground level Ozone

  • Current level of major air pollutants including O3 is available in   Portal of the Central Control Room for Air Quality Management, pertaining to CPCB.
  • Ground level ozone is a secondary pollutant and formed through complex photochemical reactions between volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Oxides of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx).
  • Sources –
    • NOx is emitted from combustion of coal, gasoline and oil in industrial operations, motor vehicles and power plants.
    • VOCs are mainly released through gasoline combustion and distribution, upstream oil and gas production, wood burning, and the evaporation of solvents and liquid fuels.

14th Edition of Admiral’s Cup - 2025

  • It is recognised as one of the world’s most respected naval sailing championships.
  • Participants from – 35 international countries.
  • Hosted by – Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala.
  • Aim – To promote camaraderie, maritime cooperation, and mutual understanding among officer trainees of friendly foreign navies.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

  • Observed annually on – 3rd December.
  • Proclaimed in – 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.
  • Objective – To promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
