Status of Policing in India Report (SPIR) 2026
- Survey conducted by – Lokniti-CSDS and Common Cause across 16 States.
- Sample – 8,306 citizens.
- Focuses on – The role of bribery and personal networks or influence in facilitating police action and the recovery of lost funds.
- Issue addressed – To access to justice in cases of cybercrime.

- Key findings – The study examines the following informal mechanisms:
- Bribery
- Personal influence/networks
- Marginalised groups were found to rely more heavily on these informal channels:
- Women
- Poor
- Rural population
- The report underscores the significance of the following factors:
- FIR registration
- Police response
- Bank–police coordination
- Formal and enforceable cybercrime redressal mechanisms
- The survey identified a correlation between informal interventions, including bribery and personal contacts, and increased rates of fund recovery.
- However, this correlation does not demonstrate a causal relationship between these interventions and improved recovery outcomes.
