Prelims: Current events national and international importance

Why in News?

Recently government of India approved first batch of 7 projects with investment of over Rs.5500 crores under Electronics Manufacturing Component Scheme (ECMS).

ECMS Scheme launched in April 2025 as a complement to the India Semiconductor Mission, seeks to strengthen India’s electronics value chain beyond finished goods.

  • Overview – These projects expected to generate production worth Rs. 36,559 crores and create over 5,100 direct jobs.
  • Approved units are located in Tamil Nadu (5), Andhra Pradesh (1), and Madhya Pradesh (1).
  • Production and Export targets
    • New units will meet 100% domestic demand for Copper Clad Laminates (CCL).
    • These will produce 20% of domestic Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) demand and 15% of Camera Module demand.
    • About 60% of production from these units will be exported.
  • Products and Components covered
    • Manufacturing of multi-layer PCBs, High-Density Interconnect (HDI) PCBs (essential for electronic devices),
    • Camera Modules (will support smartphones, drones, laptops, tablets, medical instruments, robotics),
    • Copper Clad Laminates (crucial for PCB production) and
    • Polypropylene Films (for making capacitors used across various electronics).
  • Strategic Significance and Breakthroughs
    • Marks India’s entry into manufacturing critical component materials.
    • First-ever Copper Clad Laminate manufacturing facility to be set up.
    • Enhances supply chain security for sectors like defence, telecom, electric vehicles (EVs), and renewable energy.
  • Economic and Industrial impact
    • Reduces import dependency and lowers domestic prices of electronic components.
    • Supports balanced regional growth beyond metro areas.
    • Complements other initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and India Semiconductor Mission.
    • Creates high-skill manufacturing and R&D jobs, advances India’s self-reliance
