Why in news?

The Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation is all set to conduct two key economic surveys, All India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS) & Situation Assessment Survey (SAS) of Agricultural Households.

  • The National Statistical Office (NSO) is conducting the large-scale household surveys on diverse social and economic subjects, conducted regularly since its inception in 1950.
  • Nodal Ministry - Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation.
  • Both AIDIS & SAS surveys are scheduled to be conducted from July 2026 to June 2027.

All India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS)

  • It is a periodic survey collecting data on household assets, liabilities, and capital formation in India.
  • Conducted by –It has conducted once in every decade by NSO, most recently it was conducted in 2019 at the request of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • The survey provides essential data for national accounts, evaluating asset inequality, analyzing credit markets, and informing policy decisions by institutions like the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
  • It is one of India’s most significant surveys on household finance.
  • Origin - Its origins go back to the All-India Rural Credit Survey (1951-52), later expanded to cover both debt and investment in 1961-62.

Situation Assessment Survey (SAS) of Agricultural Households

  • Launched in - 2003.
  • Conducted by - The National Statistics Office (NSO).
  • Aim - To evaluate the socio-economic status of farming households in India.
  • Objectives - To provide a comprehensive overview of the economic well-being of farming communities, including their income, expenditure, productive assets, indebtedness, farming practices, and access to resources and technology.
  • Coverage - Rural areas of India, encompassing agricultural households involved in various activities like crop cultivation, animal husbandry, poultry, fishery, and other related agricultural pursuits.
  • Data collected on -
    • Household income and expenditure.
    • Indebtedness and access to credit.
    • Land and livestock ownership.
    • Crop and livestock production.
    • Farming practices and use of technology.
    • Access to government schemes and crop insurance.
