Why in News?
Recently, Botanists formally described a new ginger lily species, Hedychium zubeengargianum, discovered in Shillong.
- Family – Zingiberaceae.
- Genus – Hedychium (ginger lilies).
- Discovery – First identified in 2018 at the Botanical Survey of India’s garden, Shillong, but the discovery was was formally published on July 21, 2026
Morphological Features
- Appearance – Fragrant, creamy‑white wild ginger lily.
- Aroma – Highly sweet-scented wild flower.

- Nomenclature– Zubeen Garg, for his extraordinary contributions to Indian music, cinema, and environmental conservation.
- Another species, Osbeckia zubeengargiana, was named after him in 2026 from Manas National Park grasslands.
