Vice President recently released Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031, a Strategic Action Plan for ornamental fisheries development, in Lakshadweep.

Fisheries and aquaculture is a sunrise sector
Lakshadweep potential
- It has a 4,200 sq km lagoon area and an Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of nearly 4 lakh sq km.
- Fisheries potential – Greater than 1 lakh tonnes/year.
- Tuna and tuna-like species account for 94,000 tonnes of potential.
- Ornamental Fisheries –
- Lakshadweep has 300+ ornamental fish species.
- Ornamental fish hatchery established at Agatti.
- 3 rearing units approved under PMMSY.
- Tuna Fisheries – Major resources-Yellowfin Tuna and Skipjack Tuna.
- Government aims to develop a global “Lakshadweep Sustainable Tuna” brand.
- Seaweed – Lakshadweep notified as a Seaweed Cluster.
- Seaweed Bank approved in collaboration with ICAR-CMFRI.
- 575 seaweed cultivation units being promoted.
- Expected to benefit women, youth and SHGs.

- Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) – fisheries development and infrastructure.
- Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) – fisheries infrastructure.

- Kisan Credit Cards (KCCs) for fishers.
