Why in News?

Recently, the Prime Minister performed the Bhoomi Pujan of the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor Project in Assam.

  • Aim – To improve regional connectivity while ensuring protection of Kaziranga’s rich biodiversity.
  • Location – The corridor connects Kaziranga National Park with the Karbi Anglong Hills wildlife movement route in Assam.
  • It passes through Nagaon, Karbi Anglong and Golaghat districts.
  • It runs through and along the southern boundary of Kaziranga National Park.
  • National Highway - Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of NH-715 in Assam.
  • Approved by – Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on 1 October 2025.
  • Mode – Implemented under Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.
  • Developments – The Kaziranga Elevated Corridor consists of
    • 35 km Elevated Wildlife Corridor.
    • 21 km greenfield bypasses.
    • 30 km widening of the existing highway from two to four lanes.

Kaziranga Elevated Project

  • Objectives – It ensures the uninterrupted movement of wildlife during floods.
  • Reduce human–wildlife conflict and animal deaths on NH-715.
  • Decongest Jakhalabandha (Nagaon) and Bokakhat (Golaghat) towns.
  • Improve road safety, reduce travel time and accident rates.
  • Facilitate growing passenger and freight traffic.  Improve connectivity between Upper Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Ecological Significance - Protects a UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Supports India’s flagship conservation efforts like Project Rhino
  • Aligns with principles of sustainable development and eco-sensitive infrastructure.
