Enhanced Anti-Doping Testing in Sports
India Develops Rare Reference Material for Enhanced Anti-Doping Testing in Sports.
- Reference Material (RM) – Methandienone Long-Term Metabolite (LTM).
- Developed by – National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), with National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL).
- Aim – To address unavailability and expensive of RMs by producing 22 such specialised RMs that are not commercially available.
|
Reference Materials
- RM – They are the most highly purified and scientifically characterized forms of drug substances or their metabolites, essential for accurate analytical testing.
- Anti-doping test – They are crucial for the detection of over 450 substances that are currently prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
|
Methandienone LTM
- Methandienone Long-Term Metabolite – It is a chemical reference material crucial for detecting the long-term presence of the banned anabolic steroid methandienone in athletes.
- Aim – To enforce transparency and integrity in sports by protecting clean athletes and acting as deterrents for use of prohibited substances.
|
Metandienone
- It is an orally active anabolic androgenic steroid & misused as a performance-enhancing drug in sports.
- Introduced to market in – 1960s, but later discontinued and withdrawn from the market.
- Prohibited by – World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER)
- NIPER is a group of nationally recognized institutions in India.
- Autonomous bodies under – Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
- Aim – To focus on advanced studies, research, and entrepreneurial training in pharmaceutical sciences and biomedical technology.
|
National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL)
- NDTL – It is a premier analytical testing & research organization.
- It is one of the 30 WADA accredited laboratories in the world.
- It is the only laboratory in the country responsible for human sports dope testing.
- Established as – an autonomous body under Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
