Why in News?

Recently, Zardalu mangoes were dispatched to the President, Prime Minister, and other dignitaries, symbolising Bihar’s agricultural heritage.

  • Appearance – Light yellow skin, elongated shape, golden‑yellow with red tinge when ripe.

Zardalu mango

  • Location – Native to Bhagalpur district, Bihar, cultivated in orchards along the fertile Ganga basin.
  • Weight – 150–300 g per fruit.
  • Texture – Rich, creamy, non‑fibrous pulp.
  • Special Feature – Strong aroma, recognised even from a distance.
  • Grading Bihar Agriculture Department.
  • Historic Origin – First tree traced to Madhuban Bagh, Bhagalpur (early 19th century)
  • Soil – Alluvial soil of the Ganga basin.
  • Climate Tropical conditions with hot summers.
  • Season – Mid‑April to June.
  • Nutritional Value – Rich in fibre & enzymes; aids digestion.
  • GI Recognition – 2018 as Bhagalpuri Zardalu.
