Why in News?

Under PM Vishwakarma scheme, capacity-building support is provided to artisans and craftspeople through basic skill training and advanced training with stipend support.

  • Aim It is a central sector scheme to support traditional artisans and craftspeople (Vishwakarmas) of rural and urban India.
  • Launched in 2023.
  • Duration 5 years (FY 2023-24 to FY 2027-28).
  • Nodal Ministry – Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises.
  • Target Group - Covers 18 trades including carpenters, potters, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, tailors, barbers, and sculptors.
  • Implementing Agency - The scheme is conjointly implemented by the following Ministries/Departments:
    • Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME).
    • Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
    • Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance (MoF).
  • Benefits- Recognition - PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID Card.
  • Skill Training- 5-7 days of basic training and 15+ days of advanced training with a stipend of Rs.500/day.
  • Tool Kit Incentive - A grant of Rs.15,000 for modern tools.
  • Credit Support - Collateral-free loans up to Rs.1 Lakh (first tranche) and up to Rs.2 Lakh (second tranche) at a concessional 5% interest rate.
  • Marketing Support - Assistance with branding and platform access.
  • Eligibility- Must be a traditional artisan (18+ age) working in the unorganized sector, using hand tools, and not have availed similar loans in the last 5 years.
  • Exclusions - A person in government service and their family members shall not be eligible.
  • Registration - Free registration is available through Common Services Centres (CSCs) using Aadhaar-based biometrics.
