Why in News?

Recently, India and Lesotho reviewed bilateral ties at the 6th Joint Commission Meeting held in New Delhi.

  • India & Lesotho enjoy close ties of friendship rooted in their shared commitment to enhancing South-South cooperation and development partnerships.
  • 6th Meeting – Both sides reviewed progress in bilateral ties and explored ways to strengthen cooperation in areas including trade and economic relations, development partnership, skilling and capacity building.
  • They also reviewed collaboration at regional and multilateral forums.
  • Next Meeting – Both countries agreed that the next meeting of the Joint Bilateral Commission for Cooperation will be held in Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, in 2027.

Lesotho

  • Location – A landlocked country surrounded by South Africa, with the capital Maseru & in the Maloti Mountains, with the highest peak in southern Africa.
  • Major Mountain Ranges – Drakensberg and Maloti Mountains.
  • Unique Features – It is also known as the "Kingdom in the Sky" or "Mountain Kingdom".
  • It is the only country in the world entirely above 1400 m elevation.
  • Over 80% of the country lies above 1,800 metres (5,906 ft).
  • Global Distinction – Lesotho is the southernmost landlocked country in the world.
  • Largest of the three independent states completely surrounded by another country
    • Lesotho
    • Vatican City
    • San Marino
  • It is the only such state outside the Italian Peninsula and Europe.
  • Unlike the other two, it is not a microstate.
