Why in News?
Recently, NABARD has facilitated geographical indication registration of 28 new products such as traditional handicrafts, handloom textiles and bamboo crafts across the country.
- NABARD – National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, established in 1982 and headquartered in Mumbai.
- India’s apex development finance institution, fully owned by the Government of India, responsible for regulating, financing, and promoting sustainable agriculture and rural development
- GI Registration – A powerful instrument to protect traditional knowledge, promote local entrepreneurship and creates value for rural producers.
NABARD’s contribution
- NABARD has supported 176 products in securing GI registration.
- Strengthens GI value chains through producer collectivisation, skill development, enterprise promotion, branding and market linkages and export facilitation.
NABARD’s Initiatives
- GI Facilitation Centres – NABARD has supported end‑to‑end support for GI registration and post‑registration activities.
- Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) – Ahmedabad (Gujarat)
- Bihar Agricultural University – Bihar.
- Madurai Agri Business Incubation Forum (MABIF) – Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
- Support for artisans and producers – Helps artisans and producer groups protect, promote, and commercialise their unique products.
- GI store initiative – NABARD set up a GI store at Aihole, Karnataka, a dedicated platform to showcase and market GI‑certified products.
