Why in News?

Recently, Panzath Nag festival a community let spring cleaning & fish catching festival was observed in Jammu & Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

About Panzath Nag Festival

  • Community led – Ecological Conservation Practice combined with traditional fish catching activity & restoration of Wetland.
  • Goal – Weed removal & Desiltation to reinstate natural spring ecosystem & maintain natural water flow.
  • Socio –Economic value – Nearly for 45 downstream villages, the spring serves as a lifeline by suppling drinking water & irrigating fields (Mostly paddy)

Festival

Significance –

  • Resource Management – It acts as participatory, community led water conservation model focusing on rural sustainability & Climate adaptability without dependence on state.
  • Eco-friendly fishing practices – To Preserve aquatic biodiversity, villagers use traditional tools such as wicker baskets ( Kanz) & Organic nets rather using destructive modern fishing gear.
  • Collective churning - Of water during festival naturally helps removing algal blooms, silt & Polythese waste, which directly enhances groundwater recharge & water clarity.
  • Social Cohesion - The annual event fosters inter-village cooperation and keeps Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) alive across generations.
