Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella launches AI-powered investigation tool for Maharashtra police, extending to all 1,100 police stations across the state.
- MahaCrimeOS AI – It is Maharashtra’s new statewide AI-powered cybercrime investigation platform built with Microsoft Foundry.
- Purpose – It helps officers process complaints faster, analyse complex data, and follow investigative procedures more efficiently, capabilities that are essential in cybercrime cases.
- Development – Jointly by
- CyberEye (a Microsoft partner ISV),
- Maharashtra Government’s MARVEL initiative (Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement), and
- Microsoft India Development Centre (IDC).
- Powered by – Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, which uses multimodal AI to process complaints in any format - PDFs, audio recordings, handwritten notes or images and extract critical information in any language.
- 4 categories – Narcotics, Cybercrime, Crimes against women and Financial fraud.
Key Highlights
- Routine Task Automation – It automates administrative tasks, which helps officers focus on solving crimes & helping victims.
- It provides a dashboard showing active cases, updates, and pending actions.
- Training & Usage – 127 officers trained in Nagpur Rural, and already used in 261 cases.
- FIR & Investigation Plans – It can read a Marathi FIR and automatically generate a detailed investigation plan.
- The system prepares this plan using Maharashtra Police protocols and guidelines issued by the High Court and Supreme Court.
- No Delay – AI copilot removes delays by giving officers immediate, step‑by‑step investigation plans in complex cases such as narcotics, cybercrime, crimes against women or financial fraud.
- Data & Intelligence Analysis – The platform analyses telecom and online data, prepares court-ready case diaries, and ensures investigations follow judicial best practices.
- Ease of Use for Officers – It is designed primarily in Marathi and makes it simple for officers, helping to cut routine work from 45 minutes to seconds, which shortens the investigation period.
- Help for complainants – By automating time-consuming tasks and speeding up investigation planning, it empowers every officer to handle advanced tasks, making investigations quicker and more reliable for complainants.
- Legal alignment – It ensures investigations meet Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) deadlines (charge sheets within 60–90 days, based on crime severity) by streamlining and structuring casework.
- Enhanced efficiency – It helps officers resolve cases faster by combining human expertise with AI-driven insights, reducing investigation timelines.
- Citizen safety focus – It aims to protect against evolving online threats like phishing, financial fraud, identity theft, and cyber harassment.
