Why in News?
Ethiopia's Hayli Gubbi volcano has erupted for the first time in 12,000 years, and the volcanic ash is likely to have recently entered the western and northern parts of India.
- It is a long dormant volcano in the remote Danakil Depression of the Afar Rift.
- Parent Range – Erta Ale Range.
- Type of volcano – Shield, Fissure Vent.
- Eruption Style – Sub-Plinian.
- Location - It is situated in an area of intense geological activity where the African and Arabian tectonic plates meet.
- Recent Eruption - The ash cloud is moving at altitudes ranging from 15,000–25,000 feet and up to 45,000 feet.
- High-level winds carried the ash cloud from Ethiopia across the Red Sea to Yemen and Oman and further over the Arabian Sea towards India.
- The ash plumes first entered Gujarat and drifted towards Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab.
- Key components - It contains volcanic ash, sulphur dioxide, and fine particles of glass and rock.
