Why in News?
Recently, the Election Commission of India announced nine decisions after a meeting of the three-member Commission.
9 New Decisions
- The decisions were made in response to internal objections raised by Election Commissioners regarding the following issues:
- Management of electoral rolls
- Voter registration, deletion, and restoration
- Information technology systems
- Internal decision-making processes and administrative procedures.
Electoral Roll & IT Systems
- ECINet is the Election Commission of India's integrated digital platform.
- ERONet is the electoral roll management system.
- Key concerns – It includes the need for an independent database audit, sufficient access for field officers, ECI oversight of IT modules, and greater transparency in IT administration.
Form 6
- Purpose – To apply for inclusion of a name in the electoral roll.
- Issue – Online Form 6 reportedly included a mandatory question regarding parents. While the ECI clarified that the prescribed form under the Registration of Electors Rules is used outside SIR, it did not specify whether the disputed question was removed.
Constitutional/Legal Institutions
- ECI is a constitutional body under Article 324.
- It supervises, directs, and controls elections for the following offices:
- Parliament
- State Legislatures
- President
- Vice-President.
