Crime in India 2024 Report
- Decline in Cognizable Crimes – In India by 58.86 lakh in 2024. & a 6% decrease from 62.41 lakh cases in 2023.
- Crime Rate (incidents per lakh population) – dropped to 418.9 (2024) from 448.3 (2023).
- Legislative Impact - Fall in "Hurt" and "Grievous Hurt" cases (down ~30.5%) may be attributed to the transition from the IPC to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita , where certain classifications were modified.
Cybercrime threat
- Growth - Surged by 17.9%, reaching 1 lakh plus cases in 2024.
- Online Fraud - Remains dominant motive, accounting for 72.6% of all cyber offences.
- Other Motives - sexual exploitation (3.1%) and extortion (2.5%).
Crimes against SCs & ST
- Declined by 3.6% (55,698 cases). Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of cases.
- Crimes against STs saw a sharp decline of 23.1% (9,966 cases). Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of cases.
- Crimes against Women - A marginal decline of 1.5%. Telangana recorded the highest crime rate against women.
- Crimes against Children - Rose by 5.9%. Missing children cases also rose by 7.8% (98,375 children).
- Offences against the State - rose by 6.6% (5,194 cases).
- Statutes involved - 84.6% were registered under the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, while 12.5% (649 cases) were under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India (ADSI) 2024
- Total Suicides - 1, 70,746 recorded in 2024.
- Daily Wage Earners form 31% of total suicides.
- Agricultural Sector suicides - Accounts for 6.2% (10,546 deaths)
- Homemakers - Stood at 22,113.
- Fatalities due to - Drug overdose jumped by 50%, from 650 in 2023 to 978 in 2024.
- Tamil Nadu reported the highest number of overdose deaths (313), followed by Punjab (106).
