Why in news?

The Prime Minister of India has extended his best wishes to people of Assam on Asom Diwas.

Asom Divas – It is celebrated on December 2 every year.

  • Commemorate – It is celebrated to commemorate the arrival of the 1st king of Ahom kingdom Sukapha in Assam.
    • Also known as Sukapha Divas in honour of the founder of the Ahom kingdom that existed for nearly 600 years.
  • The Tai Ahom Development Council (TADC) organized the unveiling of a statue of Swargadeo Sukapha in Nazira, Sivasagar district.

Swargadeo Chaolung Sukapha

  • He established the Ahom kingdom in 1228 AD.
  • Origin – Sukapha was a Tai prince who migrated from Mong Mao, crossed the Patkai Hills, and founded the Ahom kingdom in Assam, shaping the region’s history for nearly 6 centuries, until 1826.
  • Clan – Belonged to the Su (Tiger) clan of the Mao-Shan sub-tribe.
  • Title – “Chaolung” Sukapha means “Great Lord.”
  • Legacy – He is remembered as the architect of “Bor Asom” (Greater Assam), symbolizing unity, harmony, and inclusivity.
    • He unified various ethnic groups of Assam by treating them as equals.
  • Death – Passed away in 1268 at Charaideo, where his burial site (maidam) remains a cultural landmark.
  • The Ahom rule is hailed as golden rule in the history of Assam, also credited for keeping the Mughal rulers away.
