Why in News?

Recently, WHO Global Health Estimates released data on life expectancy, healthy life expectancy, causes of death and disease burden for 2000–2023.

Key Findings

  • Post-Pandemic Recovery – India experienced an increase of 2.9 years in expected lifespan during the two years following the pandemic-era lows.
  • Healthy Life Expectancy (HALE) – In 2023, India's healthy life expectancy, defined as the number of years lived in full health, reached 60.6 years, an increase from 58.4 years in 2021.
  • Global Mortality and Life Expectancy Trends
  • Global life expectancy in 2023 was 73.3 years.
    • In 2019, global life expectancy was 73.4 years.
  • Global healthy life expectancy in 2023 was 62.8 years.
    • This is 0.4 years lower than in 2019.
  • Non-communicable diseases accounted for 74% of global deaths in 2023, up from 58% in 2000.
  • Eight of the ten leading causes of death worldwide were non-communicable diseases.
  • Disease Burden – Non-communicable diseases, such as ischemic heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), continue to be primary contributors to mortality in the region.
  • Although non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are becoming more common, the leading causes of death in India in 2023 still included the following conditions:
    • Diarrhoeal diseases
    • Tuberculosis
    • Lower respiratory infections
