Mount Chimborazo (a volcano) – A Closest Point to Space

  • Reason – Even though Mount Everest is taller above sea level, the peak of Chimborazo is actually farther from the center of the Earth.
  • Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador is 2,000 metres closer to space than Mount Everest.
  • Because Earth bulges at the equator, this makes Chimborazo the closest point on Earth to outer space.

Geography

Kármán line

  • Located at – 100 km above sea level.
  • It is an imaginary line that demarcates the earth’s atmosphere from space.
  • Established in – 1960s by a record-keeping body called Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI).
  • Earth isn’t a perfect sphere — It’s slightly flattened at the poles and bulged at the equator.
    • Because of this shape, the distance from the centre of the Earth to the surface isn’t the same everywhere.
  • Closest to space – Doesn’t just depend on a mountain’s height, it depends on where it’s located on the planet.
  • Regulate airspace – It marks, roughly, the altitude beyond which a traditional aircraft can’t fly.
    • Any aircraft flying beyond it needs a propulsion system to pull away from the earth’s tug.
    • It also acts as a legal reference that separates airspace that a country can claim to own from space itself.
  • Facts –
    • Astronauts at the International Space Station orbit Earth about 400 km above that’s just four times higher than where space officially begins.
    • Planes fly at around 10–12 km, far below the Kármán line.
